Deadly class

What is it about Computer Concepts & Applications that hurts people so bad? I'm an adjunct instructor at Tulsa Community College. As a matter of fact, I teach Computer Concepts & Applications. My students think the class is OK and it doesn't seem to affect them too badly but there is a problem with it just the same. The class seems to attack the relatives of my students. I can't get through a semester without hearing how somebody's grandmother died or their aunt is ill or their mother's legs and hands are being amputated. The student needs to leave class early or needs to be excused from that test or that homework because of the tragedy they have in their lives. Someone else is dying. Seems every time we get to the semester project there's an epidemic of unknown diseases attacking the relatives of my students. I think I should document this phenomenum and turn it in to someone. Maybe I could become famous. I tell them in the syllabus and repeatedly in person - I don't grade excuses. I may say "Hey, that's a good excuse". But I don't grade it. I grade performance. I'm sorry, I don't really care if you have a bunch of delicate relations who get sick everytime you have a rough day. I'm sorry but I believe that it's probably just not true. I've learned that the quiet person, the one who's minding their business and turning in the work and performing well, is often the one who really has the challenges to overcome. And overcome them they do. Life's all about rising above adversity. Life is not about excuses. People don't buy excuses, they buy performance. If you're the type of person who looks for reasons to have failed instead of reasons to produce then you're not worth much anyway.
